Chiefly consisting of reports to president of S.C. College, Columbia, S.C., as professor of mathematics; also including reports to S.C. College Board of Trustees, taken as Faculty Secretary; including letter, 9 Dec. 1846, from Twiss to Judge D[avid] L[ewis] Wardlaw, recommending Maj. Matthew J. Williams for professor of mathematics. Report of the faculty, 29 Nov. 1837, to Board of Trustees, S.C. College, Columbia, S.C., listing senior class members, identifying honor graduates, recommending that degrees be granted to John L. Manning, William M. and William C. McIver, ruling of the Board in cases of Campbell R. Bryce and W. Huntt, paying expenses of Leslie McCandless from the Charleston Orphan House, and expulsion of D.J. Red and James Warley Miles for planning a duel. Contract, 19 Nov. 1841, with Thomas H. Wade, re repairs and additions to S.C. College library building.

The Charleston Orphan House, the first municipal orphanage in the U.S., was created by an act of the city council on October 18, 1790, at the instigation of council member, John Robertson. By this act, the Orphan House was charged with "supporting and educating poor orphan children, and those of poor distressed and disabled parents, who are unable to maintain them".
